This, the first stage of a bull fight, is when a matador watches a picador stab a bull in its neck: a move which aims to weaken the bull and provide for its eventual demise.
Mr. Ballman stood watching this interloper introduce himself to Lucy.
He imagined Lucy was a picador.
Her smile stabbed Newbie in the neck, weakening him forever.
Mr. Ballman, very pleased with his eventual victory, suddenly smiled.
Lucy was introducing him to her new acquaintance, having already gone around the circle with the other family members names, at Newbie's request.
Little did Lucy know that Newbie and Mr. Ballman had met before, quite certainly.
And then he mentioned his name.
