Jay took one last look over the top and then sank down beside her, holding her closed eyelids with his caress of a gaze. The air went out of him, too.
After a few moments, Lucy's knees came up to her elbows, and her chin to her hands. She looked sideways at Jay.
"What just happened?" She said, in a weary, wondering tone just above a whisper.
He looked at her. She closed her eyes, buried her brow in her elbows.
He opened his mouth to explain the rabid fan girls, but decided he better let that cat stay in the bag a while longer, at least until she was stable.
He lifted his arm to place it in a comforting loop around her shoulders. Wait.
He reckoned those guys grabbing at her in the chase and at least the one who'd taken her picture would be more than happy to seize advantage in a time like this, and he reconsidered.
Instead he stood up to peek over the dumpster lid one more time, just for reassurance.
He sighed, too.
