As the music swirled to a crescendo, and the flurry of people and puppets on stage swung round in precariously rapid circles, Jay grabbed Lucy's hand and pulled her across his body, following her into the darkness of stage left.
Their puppet costumes rattled to a quiet slump on scuffed floor slats.
For a brief moment, their melancholic afterpulse almost erupted in mirth.
And then truth came back.
Fear crept into her eyes like a lunar eclipse.
He comforted her hands, holding them tighter.
She was frightened, and she let go, backing away.
He saw her eyes asking him questions.
There was no time.
A curtain rattled.
She grabbed his hand, and they ran.
